CAN I CALL AND TALK TO MY SON?  CAN HE CALL ME?

Yes, NBR encourages you to keep the lines of communication open whether it be by letter or phone. We strongly suggest you discuss with your son what would be the best time to reach him. It would be advisable to find out what his schedule is, or perhaps make the call person-to-person. Just like with the letters, please try to keep the calls informative and pleasant. NBR will only monitor how your son is reacting to the conversation. If it seems to be upsetting to him we will ask that the call be ended. Since our phone is a business phone (with 2 lines) we must keep it open for that purpose. We do feel that calls from parents are important and are, therefore, business. Calls from friends, whether from the hometown or Alliance, are not allowed for 2 reasons:

1.  Our line is for business, not for socializing.

2.  Experience has shown us that these calls from friends often have a negative effect on a resident’s behavior. In order to help parents hold down their phone bills, NBR limits calls to home to 2 collect calls per month from the Ranch. You know your financial situation better than we do, so if you’re unable to afford 2 calls per month, feel free to refuse the call, but please write a letter to your son and explain that to him. Of course, we’re sure you understand that NBR simply cannot afford to pay for all of these calls. NBR has phone cards available on campus for boys to purchase. This allows the boys to make additional calls to their family, once per week. Another reason we limit the number of calls, and may limit when he calls you, is that we have found that often they only want to call when they are upset or things aren’t going their way. We do know that sometimes they call from pay phones at school. If you choose to accept the call, that’s fine with us.

"Leg-Up" -- In life at some point in time most everyone will need a leg-up. It may simply mean a hug, a pat-on-the-back or sometimes help that only a professional can provide. The Nebraska Boy's Ranch is here to help provide that "LEG-UP" with a safe home environment for boys in need and to provide adult living skills for their future!
